What is the history of the NEMO Science Museum?
The Museum started back in 1923 by painter Herman Heijenbrock who was an industrial artist. The theme he followed was labor and technology and he wanted to create a space to showcase his vast collection of objects and paintings and it was named the Labor Museum. The main purpose of the founder was to create an enthusiasm for technology in the younger generation.
Following World War II the Museum was reconstructed and a new board and director named it the Netherlands Institute for Industry and Technology. The exhibits now include photographs, products, models, diagrams and film screenings about technology.
In the 70s the Museum adopted a more American approach to science and introduced fun and play as a medium of learning about science and technology. This continued throughout the 80s and in the 90s the Museum was relaunched with a new name at a new location as The New Metropolis.
